Unless you’ve been hiding under an unsustainable rock, you might have noticed it was Earth Day this weekend.
If, like me, you are a little confused about what that actually is though, never fear. I’ve done the hard work – so you don’t have to.
Earth Day is the ‘birth’ of the modern environmental movement. Sorry – what? Basically in 1970, a guy called Senator Nelson organised a bunch of lectures to educate people about growing environmental problems. This was pretty much the first environmental protest, and it was so successful it crossed class and political divides, engaging over 20 million people in its first year. Nice one, Nelson.
20 years later, Earth Day went global (lol) and now over 1 billion people get involved each year. It’s so popular, it’s recognised as the world’s largest non-religious event. It serves as a call to action to keep the pressure on all of us – individuals, businesses, organisations and governments – to keep advocating for environmental advancement and improved legislation.
This year, Earth Day is all about #InvestInThePlanet. Here at Bagboard, that’s exactly what we’ve set out to do. Our reusable paper bags not only replace single-use plastic ones, we also remove ocean-bound plastic every time someone reuses one. So far we have removed over 400K plastic bags from the ocean with the help of our friends over at Plastic Bank. Thanks to people like you.
But most importantly, we also partner with sustainable brands who put the planet first. Because every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote on the type of world you want. And we believe that you should be able to use your spending power to support the brands who share the same values as you do.
So get your reusable water bottles at the ready, pack your own lunch and maybe think about a couple of meat-free meals if you can manage that. And maybe the next time you need to buy something, take a second to check out what’s on offer in the Bagboard app, and invest in the brands that invest in the planet.
